Wood Pasture Parkland Sites

Torwoodlee Estate, Tweeddale (Grid Ref: NT 468 373)

100 native trees were planted at Torwoodlee Estate near Galashiels. The trees were planted on 4 sites covering an area of 7ha of pasture land creating links between existing areas of woodland.

Dryhope and Kirkstead Farms, Yarrow Valley (Grid Ref: NT 280 247, NT 252 238)

These two upland farms on Philiphaugh Estate are located in the upper Yarrow Valley near St Mary's Loch. 500 trees were been planted in boxes creating over 100ha of upland wood pasture grazed by cattle and sheep.

Sundhope, Yarrow Valley (Grid Ref: NT 333 248)

Sundhope Farm contains smattering of native woodlands separated by upland grazing. 300 parkland trees were planted over 60ha of open hillside create links between these woodlands.

March Wood, Yarrow Valley (Grid Ref: NT 242 213)

March Wood is a small community woodland on the banks of St Mary's Loch. It is an open woodland and contains some mature larch and Scots pine. March Wood has cultural and historical significance and is referred to by local writer Sir Walter Scott. Local volunteers and school children built 10 tree boxes and planted them with the next generation to ensure the continuity of this wood in the future.

The Pirn, Tweeddale (Grid Ref: NT 341 374)

This open hillside overlooking the Tweed Valley south of Innerleithen was planted with 100 oak trees. Grazing pressure in this area is low so tall tree tubes were used to protect the trees instead of wooden boxes.

Broadmeadows, Yarrow Valley (Grid Ref: NT 409 300)

50 trees protected in boxes have been planted in and around the hamlet of Yarrowford, creating the next generation of parkland trees and linking small areas of woodland.

Chapelhope & Riskinhope, Loch of the Lowes (Grid Ref: NT 232 182)

Further up the Yarrow Valley from Dryhope and Kirkstead lie Chapel Hope and Riskinhope farms. 180 trees were planted to create 70ha of new wood pasture and links between Hermanlaw and Muchra ancient woodlands site and other small pockets of woodland in this area.

St Mary's Kirkyard, St Mary's Loch (Grid Ref: NT 254 236)

A mature ash tree in St Mary's Kirkyard is the a remnant of the upland wood pasture habitat that once thrived in the area shown in first edition Ordnance survey maps. 20 trees have now been planted around this historic site which connect the wood pasture recreated at Dryhope and Kirkstead, with the ancient woodland sites at Cammerlaws and Henderland bank.

Brockholes, Berwickshire (Grid Ref: NT 820 642)

The farm at Brockholes in the east of the Borders 50 parkland trees were planted on land adjacent to the 17ha wood pasture woodland site.

Buckholm Hill, Galashiels (Grid Ref: NT 485 375)

Buckholm Hill overlooks the market town of Galashiels. Among the hawthorn scrub woodland 100 oaks and ash trees have been planted in boxes.

Addinston, Carfrae Lauderdale (Grid Ref: NT 515 516)

50 mixed trees have been planted on creating 40ha of pasture land on this farm.

Selkirk Deer Park, Selkirk (Grid Ref: NT 473 276)

This historic deer park lies on the outskirts of Selkirk and contains some fine examples of mature wood pasture with widely spaced open canopied trees. 200 tree boxes were built to protect the newly planted oak, ash and alder trees planted to regenerate this wood pasture habitat. This site can be viewed from Selkirk Hill and the Borders Abbey Way, Selkirk to Hawick Section.

Hartrigge, Jedburgh (Grid Ref: NT 657 213)

100 oak, ash and Scots pine trees were planted among the mature wood pasture on the north side of Jedburgh.

Philiphaugh Estates, Selkirk (Grid Ref: NT 455 29)

Some 50 trees were planted on the Philiphaugh Estate to regenerate existing parkland habitat and connect pockets of woodland.

Kailzie Gardens (Grid Ref: NT 282 383)

Kailzie Gardens contain some majestic, mature trees including the Kailzie Larch, reputed to be one of the oldest larch trees in Scotland. Several trees were planted here to bring on the next generation of parkland trees.

Bow Farm, Stow (Grid Ref: NT 458 418)

On the slopes of the Gala valley south of Stow 110 trees have been planted to create over 14ha of wood pasture on 2 sites.

Cossarshill, Ettrick Valley (Grid Ref: NT 240 140)

In the Upper Ettrick valley 150 trees were planted to create 25ha of wood pasture on 2 sites.

Tweedswood, Melrose (Grid Ref: NT 571 346)

Tweedswood is a very picturesque site by the three bridges at Leaderfoot. The open grazing lands sloping down to the Tweed has been planted with 17 trees in small groups.

Kittyfield, Melrose (Grid Ref: NT 566 353)

Located on the north bank of the Tweed at Leaderfoot, 26 trees were planted on 2 locations covering 4ha.

Oakendean, Melrose (Grid Ref: NT 561 338)

Between hedgerows and small woodland copses, 25 trees have been planted in boxes creating 2ha of wood pasture.

Airhouse, Lauder (Grid Ref: NT 485 525)

Airhouse Farm contains pockets of woodland and shelterbelts. 50 trees were planted in boxes here to link these areas of woodland. An 10ha of wood pasture woodland was also planted here to build on the mosaic of woodland habitats.

Glengaber, Tweeddale (Grid Ref: NT 342 306)

The Glengaber area contains only a handful of mature rowan trees. To ensure the continuity of trees in this area, local volunteers built exclosures and planted them with saplings grown from those remaining trees.
